Frequently Asked Questions

BASSET stands for the Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training program of the State of Illinois. The BASSET program is an educational and training tool for sellers and servers of alcoholic beverages to teach them to sell and serve responsibly and stay within the law. The BASSET Program serves as a preventive measure to discourage over consumption, underage drinking, and keep intoxicated drivers off the roads.

BASSET training is not mandatory by the State of Illinois; however it is required in several municipalities in the state. You should check with your employer or local ordinance to see if it is required where you work. Please note that although the BASSET program may not be mandatory in your local municipality, many businesses require BASSET training.

Becoming Seller/Server certified is an important step in ensuring that you serve and sell alcohol responsibly. In some cases, you may receive a lower penalty for violating a sales or service law if you have been certified. Your employer may also require that you be Seller/Server certified before you begin work.

Upon successfully completing the BASSET course final exam, you will be able to immediately print your temporary certificate; it will also be emailed to you. On a weekly basis we submit BASSET completion records to the ILCC. The ILCC will create your official BASSET card and mail it to you at the address you provided during registration.

BASSET certification is valid for 3 years from the date of course completion unless you work in a municipality where re-certification is required more often.
